The silkscreen technique usually forces paint onto canvas via a high-contrast negative stencil. When the image appears, it will come with powerful blacks from the photograph. In addition, you can duplicate images using alternative color schemes. In this case, you can use any portrait for a silkscreen-style image. You should go with those which have powerful edges to get better performance. This guide will let you know about the silk screen effect.

What is a silk screen effect?

SSE or silk screen effect is a phenomenon you can see visually in rear-projection televisions. According to the viewers, it is the texture of the television display in front of the image. It is available on all rear-projection televisions like DLP and Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS).

It highlights the most when you view bright white or very light-colored images. However, several users report seeing “sparkles” while viewing very bright-colored images. Its nomenclature comes from the visual appearance. Ensure that you should not confuse SSE with SDE, another visual phenomenon seen in rear-projection televisions.

What is the cause of the Silk Screen Effect?

Texture screens used in rear-projection televisions cause SSE. Generally, the Rear-projection television manufacturers take the help of textured displays to boost the viewing angle of the television.

How can you reduce the silk screen effect?

If you are willing to reduce SSE, you have to accurately calibrate the rear-projection television’s picture controls. It is most prominent while the brightness and contrast are set very high. In this case, you should manage the contrast and brightness. Besides, you have to calibrate the picture controls to decrease SSE.

How to make a silk screen-type image?

We have given details to let you know how to generate a silkscreen-type image out of your photograph. It works like the pop artist Andy Warhol famous in the 1960s. Warhol, the Pope of Pop Culture, created silkscreen paintings of Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, etc.

Step 1) Select image:

Your first task is to open the correct file. Then, you need to select and contrast the image.

Step 2) Knock out the Background:

If you are willing, take the help of any technique known to you to extract the image from the Background. For instance, you can select the filter “Extract.”

Step 3) Posterize the image:

Whether you find the image contrasty to open, you might use “Threshold” instead. However, sometimes you may need to posterize the image. In such cases, your task is to select ‘Image > Adjustments > Posterize.’

Step 4) Desaturate the image:

After that, you have to convert the picture into black and white without turning it to Grayscale. If you are willing to accomplish the image, you can use the ‘Desaturate’ command. Hence, select the option ‘Image > Adjustments > Desaturate’.

Step 5) Boost the Contrast:

If your desaturated image isn’t sufficient for contrasty, you may apply the ‘Levels’ command. In this case, your task is to select ‘Image > Adjustments > Levels.’ After that, you need to move the ‘White’ slider to eliminate other information. You should leave the essential art of the face.

Step 6) Make the Canvas:

Now, your job is to make a new document that you can use as the canvas for the artwork. If you want to create the canvas, you should navigate to ‘File > New..’ on the ‘Preset’ drop down the ‘New Document’ dialog box list. After that, you should select the open document. Thus, the canvas remains proportionate to the image.

Step 7) Expand the Canvas:

You need to expand it to M to accommodate four copies of the image side by side. Hence, you have to first head towards ‘Image > Canvas Size.’ Select 100% for both Width and Height available in the Canvas Size dialog box. Ensure that the Anchor should exist in the middle of it. In addition, you have to ensure that white is the Background color for the Canvas extension.

Step 8) Divide the canvas into four equal parts:

You should ensure that you can view the rulers. If these are not visible, you must tap Command-R (Mac) or Control-R (Windows). In this case, your task is to set the rulers’ measurement unit to Percent.

Then, your job is to select ‘Photoshop > Preferences’ (Mac) or ‘Edit > Preferences’ (Windows). When you are in the Preferences dialog box, you must select Units and Rulers and select Percent for Rulers under Units; whether you change the measurement unit a lot, only Control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on the ruler to make the options available. As soon as you set the rulers, you have to drag out vertical and horizontal guides to the middle of the canvas, which divides it into four equal parts.

Step 9) Draw a marquee in the first quadrant:

Ensure that you have activated the ‘Snap to Guides’ to create an accurate rectangular selection. After that, you have to select ‘View > Snap To >Guides.’ In this case, you can take the help of the Rectangular marquee tool to draw a marquee in the first quadrant.

Step 10) Copy and paste the image into the new canvas:

First, you need to return to the document where the image is. After that, you should select the option ‘Select > All.’ Next, select ‘Edit > Copy.’ Next, move to the document with the new canvas and select ‘Edit > Paste into.’ You can see the picture pasted into the first quadrant automatically.

Step 11) Duplicate the layer three times:

If you’re willing to make four versions of the image, you must duplicate the layer three times.

Step 12) Colorize the Background:
  • When you colorize the Background, you should first hide four top layers.
  • After that, activate the Background.
  • Next, you should choose the first quadrant.
  • Hence, you can use a solid color to fill it.
  • Then, you have to continue running the procedure until you see the Background with four different colors.
Step 13) Display the top layers:

Navigate to the Layers palette. Then, hit the eye icon, and you can see it beside the top four layers to display (unhide) them again.

Step 14) Load the selection:

Move to the Select menu and select Load Selection. After that, select Layer 1 Transparency as the Channel in the Load Selection dialog box. Again, it helps to generate a marquee automatically around the image of the first layer.

Step 15) Make a fill layer:

As soon as you choose the first layer, you should hit the Create new fill or adjustment layer button, which is available at the bottom part of the Layers palette. Next, you should select a solid color from the Pick a solid color box. As you have chosen the image already, the solid color helps to fill the layer that automatically creates a mask. Therefore, you can find the first layer’s content colorized.

Step 16) Change the blending mode:

If you’re willing to complete the image colorization, you must change the layer’s blending mode to Multiply. Then, you can see the color blending with the underlying layer. After that, your job is to remove the color on the face and leave the shirt only with colors.

Step 17) Repeat the procedure:

You have to repeat steps 14-16 to complete the artwork on the remaining layers.

Conclusion:

SSE or Silk screen effect is the texture of your TV display. Go through the article appropriately to know how to create a silkscreen-type image.
